Each year in October, PAs celebrate National PA Week which recognizes the PA profession and its contributions to the nation’s health. This year, on behalf of the Illinois Academy of PAs, we are pleased to share that Governor Bruce Rauner has declared October 6-12, 2018 as PA Week in Illinois! This is an exciting and tremendous honor as we have more than 3200 licensed PAs and more than 450 PA students in Illinois who provide valuable healthcare services to thousands of patients.
Right now, there are more than 123,000 PAs working across the country—and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the profession is expected to grow 37% between now and 2036. PAs are well positioned to treat our nation’s most vulnerable populations, including those in rural and underserved communities. Here in Illinois, we are in the midst of an unprecedented physician shortage and a complex opioid crisis – and PAs are on the front lines. Always innovative and always flexible, PAs are the solution to some of our nation’s biggest problems.
This year, we would like to recognize the many efforts of our own IAPA lobbying and legislative team, Dan Shomon Inc., as well as our PA board members who spend countless volunteer hours trying to improve practice for all PAs in Illinois. It is because of their hard work that we were able to modernize the PA Practice Act, remove arbitrary PA:physician ratio barriers and recognize PAs as Emergency Services Personnel. This team also was recognized this year by receiving AAPA’s National “Constituent Outreach and Advocacy Award” for their commitment to creating progressive PA practice environments.
Finally, the IAPA would like to thank PAs for all they do for patients, students and our profession. It is because of your hard work and dedication to patient care that we do what we do. Please know that we are your voice for the PA profession and we are committed to removing unnecessary and antiquated barriers to care, thus moving us one step closer to Optimal Team Practice (OTP).
Congratulations and Happy National PA Week!
